Security Council

The Security Council’s primary responsibility is to ensure that there is international peace. Member states of this council gather to discuss and form resolutions that would be able to resolve an issue, and maintain peace and order. The Security Council decides if an issue is a threat to the peace in the region. In some cases, resolutions might resort to sanctions on countries to make them comply with the agreement.

Lethal Autonomous Robots (LARs) refer to robots that can make decisions about human life based on their own discretion. In other words, these robots can kill lives without human intervention.  Although not fully researched into or developed yet, this technology can prove to be very devastating in the future. This gives rise to many ethical questions, mainly the fact that Robots should not be allowed to determine a human’s life.

If there are so many issues, why do countries still insist on the development of these robots? One reason is because it can completely change the method of warfare in the case of a conflict. Now that robots are the ones on the battlefield, it means that less human soldiers would be required to sacrifice their lives in the case of a conflict, and we can avoid much more deaths on the battlefield.

In the Security Council, Delegates will debate on whether we should prohibit or authorize the research and use of LARs, and come up with a resolution that can solve the issue.
